What's the difference between duck down, goose down, and recycled down?Updated 5 days ago
At Triple F.A.T. Goose, we use premium insulating materials that are responsibly sourced and certified to ensure both quality and sustainability. While all of our down options provide exceptional warmth and comfort, there are key differences between white duck down, white goose down, and recycled down.
White Duck Down
White duck down is widely used in high-quality outerwear. It offers an excellent warmth-to-weight ratio, reliable insulation, and a soft hand feel. Duck down clusters are generally smaller than goose down clusters, which makes them slightly less lofty, but still highly effective for warmth and performance. Typically, this is used in our Saga and Aisen collection water-resistant puffer styles. Duck down traditionally finds its features best suited for puffers and bubble jackets.
White Goose Down
White goose down is regarded as the highest grade of down available. Its larger, more mature clusters allow it to trap greater volumes of air, producing superior loft, insulation, and resilience. This means jackets filled with goose down are lighter in weight while delivering greater warmth compared to duck down of the same fill power. Typically, this is used in our Saga and Aisen collection waterproof parka and coats. Goose down traditionally features the most warmth per cubic inch, and is considered a must for our heavy duty styles.
Recycled Down
Recycled down is sourced from pre-existing down products and then cleaned, sterilized, and reprocessed to meet strict performance standards. It provides comparable warmth and softness to virgin down while supporting circularity and reducing environmental impact. Due to the nature of recycling, it is neither considered or defined as pure goose or duck down. This is where sourcing matters most. Our recycled down is bluesign® approved, ensuring it meets rigorous criteria for sustainability, safety, extremely high-quality, and responsible production. Typically, this is used in all of our Reforged Supply collection styles.
Certifications
All down used in our jackets (whether white duck down, white goose down, or recycled down) is RDS (Responsible Down Standard) and IDFL (International Down and Feather Testing) certified. These certifications guarantee traceability, ethical sourcing, and compliance with rigorous global quality standards.
